GEO Basics

GEO is the practice of optimizing your website so that AI-powered search engines — like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot — discover, understand, and cite your content in their answers.

It builds on traditional SEO but requires additional signals: structured data (schema markup), clear authorship, and content written in direct-answer formats that AI engines can extract.

Think of GEO as SEO — but instead of ranking on page 1, you're getting cited inside the AI's answer itself.

Traditional SEO gets you a blue link on Google's results page. GEO gets your content directly quoted or cited inside an AI-generated answer. The user may never click through — but your brand and expertise get credited.

  • SEO goal: Rank #1 on Google's results page
  • GEO goal: Be the source AI engines cite in their answers
  • SEO weight: Backlinks, keyword density, page speed
  • GEO weight: Structured data, author identity, direct-answer content

The good news: many GEO improvements (schema, author signals, content depth) also directly help your traditional SEO rankings.

GEO applies to any AI engine that retrieves and cites web content, including:

  • ChatGPT (with Browse / web search enabled)
  • Perplexity — the most citation-heavy AI search engine
  • Google AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience)
  • Bing Copilot
  • Claude (with web access)
  • Gemini (Google's AI assistant)

The signals GEO Checker checks are effective across all of these platforms.

Yes. GEO and SEO are complementary — not competing. Strong SEO means more pages indexed, more backlinks, and higher domain authority, all of which help AI engines discover and trust your content.

The best strategy does both. Most GEO improvements also benefit SEO, so you're not doing double work.
Scoring & Results

The score is out of 100, split equally across four categories:

  • Structured Data — 25 pts: JSON-LD schema types, FAQPage, Article, Organization, Breadcrumb, HowTo, Review
  • Content Quality — 25 pts: Word count, heading structure (H1/H2/H3), FAQ content, definitions, lists, tables
  • E-E-A-T & Authority — 25 pts: Author presence, publication dates, external citations, expert identity
  • Technical & Discovery — 25 pts: HTTPS, indexability, meta description, OG image, canonical, language, alt text

Each signal is weighted based on publicly confirmed AI search ranking factors.

  • 85–100 (Grade A): Top tier — strong AI citation candidate across all major platforms
  • 70–84 (Grade B): Strong presence — getting cited regularly, room for improvement
  • 50–69 (Grade C): Moderate — missing several key signals, visible in some contexts
  • 30–49 (Grade D): Weak — AI engines struggle to classify and trust your content
  • 0–29 (Grade F): Not visible — critical signals are missing
Most sites score 20–50 on their first check. The improvement plan shows the fastest path to 70+.

Visual design does not affect GEO score. GEO Checker analyzes the underlying HTML and structured data — what AI engines actually read. A beautiful site with no schema, no named author, and no FAQ content will score low because AI engines cannot extract the structured signals they need to confidently cite it.

Think of it like a book without a table of contents, author bio, or index. It may be great content, but it's hard to reference quickly.

Re-run GEO Checker after making any changes to your schema, content, or meta tags to confirm improvements registered. For ongoing monitoring, once per month is a good cadence as AI search engine behavior continues to evolve.

Improving Your Score

Adding FAQ schema markup (FAQPage JSON-LD) is consistently the highest-ROI change. AI engines extract Q&A pairs directly into their responses. You can add it in under 30 minutes.

The top 3 in order of impact:

  1. Add FAQPage JSON-LD with 5+ targeted questions
  2. Add a named author with credentials (Person schema + visible byline)
  3. Increase content depth to 600+ words with clear H2/H3 structure

Schema markup is structured data you add to your site using JSON-LD — a small code block placed in your page's <head>. It labels your content for machines.

Most impactful types for GEO, in order:

  • FAQPage — AI engines extract Q&As directly into answers
  • Article / BlogPosting — Establishes content type and author
  • Organization — Brand identity and trust signals
  • Person — Author credentials and expertise
  • BreadcrumbList — Site structure and topic hierarchy
  • HowTo — Step-by-step content extracted directly into AI answers

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It's the framework AI engines use to decide which sources to cite.

How to improve it:

  • Add a named author with a bio to every key page
  • Add Person and Author schema
  • Add datePublished and dateModified in your schema
  • Cite credible external sources using <cite> tags
  • Ensure your site runs on HTTPS
  • Add a clear About page with organization details

The formula for being cited by AI engines:

  1. Add JSON-LD schema (especially FAQPage and Article types)
  2. Name a clear author with verifiable credentials
  3. Write content that directly answers specific questions — not vague overviews
  4. Include a definition or direct answer near the top of each page
  5. Cite external authoritative sources
  6. Keep information accurate and up-to-date (include dateModified)
  7. Ensure your site is HTTPS and indexable (no noindex)

Page speed is critical for traditional SEO but is less directly relevant for GEO citations. AI engines fetch and index your content based on structure and signals — not load time.

That said, a fast site improves overall crawlability and user experience, which indirectly supports GEO over time. Don't prioritize speed over schema and content improvements when starting out.

About GEO Checker

Yes — GEO Checker is completely free to use. No account required, no credit card, no usage limits. Paste any URL and get your full scored report instantly.

We keep it free with non-intrusive advertising. If you use an ad blocker, please consider whitelisting us — it's the only way we keep the lights on.

Very large or heavily protected platforms (YouTube, Google, Facebook, Amazon, Wikipedia) actively block external fetching tools. GEO Checker works best on:

  • Independent business websites
  • Blogs and content sites
  • Documentation and resource pages
  • E-commerce product pages

The tool automatically tries 3 different proxy servers before reporting a failure. If your site is blocked, it may have aggressive bot protection enabled — this is unrelated to your actual GEO score.

No. GEO Checker fetches publicly available HTML from the URL you provide and analyzes it in your browser session. We do not store the URLs you submit, the results generated, or the content of the pages analyzed. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Major platforms like YouTube, Wikipedia, and Amazon score low because their content is mostly JavaScript-rendered — so our crawler sees an empty or minimal HTML page. They also don't need traditional GEO signals because they have direct data-sharing agreements with AI companies and are referenced by AI engines through brand recognition and training data.

GEO Checker is designed for content websites, blogs, e-commerce stores, and businesses — not for mega-platforms that operate differently.
